Plant is a perennial herb native to parts of Brazil and Paraguay. The leaves of the plant have been used for centuries by the Guaraní people of South America to sweeten tea and other beverages. The plant was first formally described by the Swiss botanist Moisés Santiago Bertoni in 1899.
